There are many methods to measure a saddle. The basic steps are the identical for both types. To determine the right size saddle, place your at an angle in the saddle. Measure from the back of the buttock to where your knee meets the seat. You may need to measure slightly smaller or larger than what you normally wear depending on your height. Make sure the measurements are accurate and you have the right measurements before buying a saddle.

Start by measuring the horse's shoulder width. If your horse is small, you can use a measuring tool that is about two feet wide. Using a string or an 8-inch wire, you can easily measure the horse's withers. The center of the measurement should be marked with a pencil. Next, position eight inches worth of measuring wire on each side. Mold it around the horse’s withers and then press it down until the line touches the horse’s skin.

A general English saddle has a pommel and cantle that are approximately equal in width. The cantle may be higher than the pommel. It should fit the horse's back evenly. A western saddle is slightly different. It should sit two to three fingers wide at the gullet, and if it's too narrow, you should try a different type of saddle. While English saddles can be more easily fitted, it's important to measure any other types of saddles.

The gullet is a crucial part of the saddle. The saddle can slip and roll, injure the horse's back or even cause the rider to lose control of the horse if the gullet is not properly measured. These outcomes are not ideal, especially on busy roads. Before purchasing a saddle, measure the horse's gullet. A medium-sized horse typically needs a medium-sized, gullet.

First, measure your child's thighs. The thigh height should be between ten- and eleven inches. The height of the upper leg should range from eleven to twelve inches. Once you have determined the thigh measurement of your child, you can measure their height and then use that information to purchase a saddle. The seat width should be approximately one-half to two inches longer than their thigh.

Next, measure how wide the saddle is. Make sure to measure it across the entire font of the saddle, level with the conchos. This is important as the widths of the saddle bars are indicative of how wide your saddle is. Half-quarter and fullQtr bars measure 6.5 inches to seven inches, while draft bars measure eight to ten inch. In the picture below, the old saddle on the right is a full quarter into a draft-sized tree, but the angle of the saddle bars is flat.

Besides the waist size, other measurements of the saddle are important to ensure a proper fit. Remember to consider the age of the child when you buy a saddle for a child. A bigger saddle may be necessary for future use if the child is just beginning. Buy a saddle that can grow with your child if they are growing. The saddle can be adjusted to their size as they gain or lose weight.
